How long does balayage last?
Balayage typically lasts 3 to 4 months before a refresh, and 5 to 6 months between full touch-ups, because the hand-painted highlights grow out softly without harsh regrowth lines.
Balayage is designed to grow out gracefully. Because the lightener is hand-painted on the surface of the hair (instead of applied root-to-tip like traditional foil highlights), regrowth blends naturally with your base color.
Typical timeline
- 6–8 weeks: gloss or toner refresh to keep tone neutral.
- 3–4 months: light "painting" touch-up around the face and mid-lengths.
- 5–6 months: full balayage redo.
What makes it last longer
- Sulfate-free shampoo and lukewarm water
- Weekly bond-repair treatment (Olaplex No. 3, K18, etc.)
- Heat protection before any hot tool
- UV-protective spray in summer
