Lactation Basics: First Two Weeks of Breastfeeding
Latch, supply, common pain points, and when to call an IBCLC.
8 min read
First 72 hours — colostrum only (tiny volumes are normal); baby loses up to 7% of birth weight.
Days 3–5 — milk transitions in; expect engorgement.
Latch checklist
- Wide mouth, lips flanged out
- Chin pressed into breast
- Audible swallowing after the first minute
- Pain that fades after the first 30 seconds (sustained pain = re-latch)
When to call an IBCLC
Persistent pain, weight gain concerns, low diaper output, or any feeling that something is off. Most insurance plans cover lactation consults — ask.
