Postpartum Recovery: The First Six Weeks
The first six weeks after birth are recovery, not a return to normal. Your body needs rest, nutrition, and support.
What's Normal
Bleeding (lochia) for 4–6 weeks, breast engorgement, mood shifts, perineal soreness or cesarean incision healing, and exhaustion.
When to Call
Heavy bleeding (soaking a pad in under an hour), fever over 100.4°F, severe headaches, vision changes, leg pain or swelling, chest pain, thoughts of harming yourself or baby — call your provider immediately.
Building Support
Postpartum doulas, lactation consultants, pelvic floor PTs, and mental health counselors are key parts of recovery.
Frequently asked
When can I exercise again?
Light walking is usually fine right away. Higher-intensity exercise typically waits until cleared at the 6-week check-up.
