Pelvic Floor Recovery After Birth: When to See a PFPT
Leaking, heaviness, or pain after birth are common but not 'normal.' A pelvic floor physical therapist can help most issues fully resolve.
Common Issues
Stress incontinence (leaking with cough/sneeze/jump), urgency, prolapse (heaviness or bulging), pain with intercourse, diastasis recti, and back pain are all common pelvic floor issues postpartum.
When to Get Evaluated
Any persistent symptom past 6 weeks postpartum is a reason to ask for a pelvic floor PT referral. In France and parts of Europe, every postpartum person gets routine PFPT.
Frequently asked
Are Kegels enough?
Sometimes — but doing them incorrectly is common. A PFPT can tell you what your specific pelvic floor needs (some need to relax, not strengthen).
